A Snapshot from Coast to Coast

This is a black-and-white revision of an illustration I made (hand-drawn) for an American Red Cross e-newsletter years ago. The original was in color; however, considering my current work is predominantly black and white, I thought it appropriate to update the illustration for my portfolio. © 2007-2018 Joe Blend. It’s been a little while since I did some Kirby fan art, so I thought I’d do something about that!

First attempt of an animal eye

I fell in love with charcoal. Its so beautiful that so much can be expressed in black and white. The universe is so beautiful

My first sketch using charcoal pencils

This is the first sketch where I felt confident that I could capture the lights and shadows. I jumped in joy when it looked like a droplet :)

“Phantassie Fantasy”, July 2025.

Apart from it being a hamlet in East Lothian somewhere, I have no idea what Phantassie’s like… The places you pass by on trains, innit.

Mud Prints & Sacred Transitions
1/3

Sometimes, a good goodbye is also a fresh hello. As we wrapped up our "Sacred Spaces" paintings, I asked our student teacher to design a one-day project—something playful, earthy, and engaging to ease the class into her care. She brought mud. Literally. Using mud and simple stencils, students pressed images—flowers, insects, wings—onto the sidewalk behind our school. There's something timeless about making marks with the ground itself. It felt ancient and immediate at the same time. These prints won’t last long, but maybe that’s the point. A fleeting image, a shared laugh, a new hand guiding the next phase of learning. Art is about making marks. Not all of them need to be permanent.
