I thought that background was illustrated. Hand drawn in blue ink. Incredible work.

His Satori. The background was initially drawn in black using pen and ink. I changed the colour in photoshop. I painted the water colour using two layers , one of blue and one of lilac which i did over the image on my light box then added them underneath on the computer. The piece of work I am currently doing is drawn in blue writing ink.

Thank you for your kind words. I am experimenting all the time with new ways to get colour into my work! Best wishes Julia

@JuliahillIllustrator Ahhh... yeah I saw the watercolor shading, but had thought you had originally drawn it with blue link. For some reason, when I draw using blue ink, the art just seems a bit dull no matter the type of paper I use. I'm looking forward to seeing how the new one you are currently working on turns out.

Your so right. I've tried drawing ink and it soaks in too much as I draw on textured paper. I have an old bottle of blue Quink that I used to fill a fountain pen with. That's working a lot better. I've added a bit of PVA to stabalize it so I can add some watercolour later. We'll see if it works!!!!!
