Drawn Opposites - A Sketchbook Challenge

It's true what they say: "Opposites attract". That's why this drawing challenge is based around the beauty of finding a balance in life - and the same goes for your sketchbook, too! The idea is to challenge artists to use both sides of the sketchbook spread, with each side being the opposite of the other. For example: day vs. night, sadness vs. joy, past vs. future...You get the idea! Moleskine and Doodle Addicts are joining forces and challenging you to think outside of the box. Your task is to combine two totally different notions to form one cohesive sketchbook spread, telling a story of two different worlds. After all, when it comes to opposites you can't have one without the other!

Moleskine

Moleskine® was created as a brand in 1997, bringing back to life the nameless black notebooks used by writers and artists like Vincent van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemingway and Bruce Chatwin that had long gone out of print. Today, the Moleskine brand encompasses a family of objects that enhance productivity and creativity including notebooks, diaries and planners, journals, bags, writing instruments, reading accessories, publishing and digital tools.

The sharp edges to show that he's strong and powerful. On the other hand, the background is black to represent the night. The soft edges to portrait a soft and kind character.

An attempt to display opposites could of any kind and - giving vs. taking, empty vs. full (considering colouring in my illustration), backward vs. frontward (postures of the characters), red/scarlet vs. blue/Prussian (favourite coloured pencils), curly vs. straight hair (reality check)... Nevertheless in the real life things often get mixed, so do the colors here on both pages.

Based on the Renaissance philosphy of the "Active & Contemplative Life" which was seen in their art, literature and music of that time. This is also a modern day interpretation based on the poems by John Milton. Scanned and rendered in PhotoShop

A week later... The drawings circle around an open eye and a closed eye. The one drawing is only coloured blue, and I have painted the negative space instead of the positive space which is far most common. In the other drawing, I have used red and yellow colours only, and keep the colours nside the lines, as a good (or boring) colourista would do.. I hereby challenge you to think different from time to time, challenge yourself. Like talking to a stranger..

The concept is the beautiful opposite moment of flowers. I try to embrace the joyful of feeling alive through colorful flowers and monochrome side express how sad or lonely when the flowers are withered. The meaning of those pages can be represent differently, like in my own thought that the colorful side remind me how to live a moment (let's cherish the moment and seize the day!) and the monochrome side I try to reminisce that there's so many reasons to be feeling faded but to be grateful will always make our vibes always positive (yep, I hope you got the point :D ) So there are 2 opposite themes live at the same time ALIVE - WITHERED/FADED COLORFUL - MONOCHROME

It seems lately I have missed reading the fine print. This is a sketchbook tribute to a pug who also missed those teeny tiny words that ruin everything. She showed up to her dream vacation in a Sun Valley covered in snow. I chose hot and cold as my opposites. Although I did use cold to tie my pages together I hope the heavy use of warm colors on the left divide the two. :) Title- Read The Fine Print using Derwent Pastels, Sakura metlic markers and Molotow all4one in Signal black&white

A juxtaposition of the real and the unreal. What distinguishes the real from the unreal? Is there any way to separate the two when both hurt the same? Is pain the entity that connects the real to the unreal? Is it the blood that drips from the broken wings of the bird and finds its way into the folds of the paper bird?

The doodle represents opposite media in terms of their behavior. Pen and markers move according to our wish, giving us lines that make interesting forms. On the other hand, watercolors are extremely fluid. They have a flow and it may seem that they have their own minds! So, we get planes that make spaces. Laying these opposite mediums on the sketchbook spread, a doodle, with contrasts of shapes and colors is formed.
