Dragon Fruit
1/3

I asked my husband (who is our Covid-period grocery shopper as I am high risk) to bring home a fruit to draw. He came home with a dragon fruit. For those who don't know this interesting edible, it's from a cactus. There are two species: the Asian species is white inside, the Central American variety is shocking pink (see photo). Great in smoothies or when nicely ripe (as this one was) it's tasty eaten out of the skin with a spoon.

Augie Doggies Family Outing

This is my personal take on Augie Doggie when he's all grown up. He has two kids of his own named Annie and Alfred. Their mother's Peggy Poodle from the Augie Doggie short; "Growing,Growing, Gone", in case one wants to know.

Old Fashioned miracles.

From "A Cabinet of Byzantine Curiosities" by Anthony Kaldellis A young man begged Daniel, an Egyptian ascetic, to come to his home and pray over his wife, who was infertile. Daniel did so and she became pregnant, but people then began to say that it was the man who had been sterile, not the wife, and that Daniel caused the pregnancy in a non-miraculous way. When he heard this, Daniel told the man to inform him when the child was born and to prepare a meal for all his friends and neighbors. After the meal, Daniel took the newborn in his arms and asked him, Who is your father? The infant, who was twenty-two days old, said, that man, pointing to the woman's husband (Ioannes Moschos, Spiritual Meadow 114) .

Mr or Mrs Hare

Superstition : Hare. Two extraordinary beliefs about the hare which are still repeated though no longer held, are that it is so timid that it never closes its eyes, even in sleep; and that once a year the creatures change their sex! A sketchbook drawing of the classical sculpture, The Wrestlers

I found this grouping quite challenging to draw. Also known as The Two Wrestlers, The Uffizi Wrestlers or The Pancrastinae. The sculpture is a Roman marble sculpture copy of a lost Greek original from the third century BCE. The piece is in the Uffizi collection in Florence, Italy.

Hardball and Riley: Monster Nuts

In my Blue Star sketchbook serious art has been interrupted by two cartoon characters I came up with years ago that I drew for my university student newspaper. They're back! Adolescent silliness returns with the adventures of Hardball and Riley. There's a bit of allegory at work in this story, so it's not as infantile as it first seems. They are certainly fun and my main characters are very easy to draw. I do sometimes spend too much time on the background.

Crazy Sun by Brianna Eisman

This doodle is a marker and ink drawing of a hyper stylized sun with a middle spiral and squiggles extruding from the center like a wild galactic heliocentric power hold. The sky is orange and hot Barbie pink and deep blue and very fun and colorful to look at. Check out more of my art at ArtsyDrawings.com

Mark Twain

Mark Twain (1835–1910) In the 1870s and ’80s, the Twain family spent their summers at Quarry Farm in New York, about two hundred miles west of their Hartford, Connecticut, home. Twain found those summers the most productive time for his literary work, especially after 1874, when the farm owners built him a small private study on the property. That same summer, Twain began writing The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. His routine was simple: he would go to the study in the morning after a hearty breakfast and stay there until dinner at about 5:00. Since he skipped lunch, and since his family would not venture near the study—they would blow a horn if they needed him—he could usually work uninterruptedly for several hours. “On hot days,” he wrote to a friend, “I spread the study wide open, anchor my papers down with brickbats, and write in the midst of the hurricane, clothed in the same thin linen we make shirts of.” Whether or not he was working, he smoked cigars constantly. One of his closest friends, the writer William Dean Howells, recalled that after a visit from Twain, “the whole house had to be aired, for he smoked all over it from breakfast to bedtime.” - From Daily Rituals: How Artists Work by Mason Currey “Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody.” ― Mark Twain #dailyrituals #inktober #MarkTwain @masoncurrey

Shared Fate

I'm always crossing the woods in the winter (safe from ticks) to discover happenings--animal movement, tree life and so on. Came upon this scene just recently, two trees that fell together during a wind event.

Crinkled Fabric

I suppose this was just a tester/practice piece? My first actual still life from observation and my first time actually using charcoal (yes, I've never truly used charcoal before. Charcoal and pastels are two things I avoid. Their looseness and freeness scare me, considering how rigid I can be). Not sure how to feel about this one. I'm my worst critic, and I've known that for a long time now. There's a lot of practice and progress to be made, but it turned out half-way decent.
