and I'm a doodle addict. Oakland, California

I’m a former Zen monk and priest who now runs a SF Bay Area nonprofit that brings mindfulness to schools. I started doodling on my iPad 5 years ago when undergoing 4 months of chemotherapeutic treatment after having been diagnosed with stage three cancer. Having a creative form during that time was a lifesaver for me. So now, I just continue to doodle, happy with the amazing technology of the iPad, Procreate and Pencil. I hope you enjoy my explorations.

#Swollen is the word for #inktober #day17. Because the city I live in is swollen from cars, buildings, humans, rats, pigeons, dirt and trash I considered the word to be proper for the problem of urbanization. Even if it's a natural transformation, it comes with a lot of issues. I see it as a concrete and steel monster eating the nature that stands in its way. © Maria!Bălan, 2018

Skip James is the man. I’ve been wanting to do something music related. I sketched this a year or two ago. It was fun to bring it into Procreate and add doodles, lettering, color and more elements like the guitar neck. I’m always looking for a way to combine my pencil with color and have it look like it really goes together. This one felt right.

This was drawn with a Japanese fountain pen, Japanese ink, and painted with Japanese watercolor. To be specific - I used Holbein watercolor and Platinum Carbon Black in a Pilot Falcon. This trio is perfect for me.

Mixed media. Acrylic, pencil, digital. This is a piece from the book “Mail Me Art - Medium Without A Message” by @littlechimpsociety. I think it was the second call for entries/book.There are now 4 books filled with awesome art drawn and painted on outsides of envelopes and packages by artists all over the world who then mailed them to the UK totally exposed to the postal service. The original was all analog. I brought this into Procreate and reworked it. I may do more when I get a chance but I’m pretty satisfied with it now.

I was tired of carrying around a bunch of Microns. I want one or two refillable pens so I started with buying a new Lamy AL-Star Fountain Pen. I love it. I got the medium nib and am able to get a nice range of line width from it. This and maybe a fine nib and I'll be all set for a travel kit. This is the first page I drew with it.
