Lava: One

Here on the big island we experienced unprecedented volcanic activity in 2018 from Kilauea and made global news. I went to work on a lava triptych inspired by the event.

While I was drawing this months ago, my tablet pen fell apart in my hand. It was bizarre and shocking, and then I completely forgot about this piece even existed. The print that almost never was.

TRUSTED BY MANY: DIGITAL RESOLUTION SERVICES IS THE RIGHT CHOICE.

Being a gym instructor at Zaki's New Life Fitness Gym, I’ve always believed in strength and resilience both physically and mentally. But I never thought I’d be tested in such an unexpected way. I’ve always tried to manage my finances responsibly, but when my cousin approached me with an opportunity in cryptocurrency, I never imagined I could fall victim to a scam. He spoke passionately about a “golden opportunity” promising incredible returns. Trusting his judgment, I invested $68,000.50. What followed was a nightmare. I soon realized the platform was a complete scam. The money was gone. I felt helpless, thinking I’d never recover my hard-earned savings. Then, a fellow gym member recommended Digital Resolution Services. At first, I was skeptical. But with nothing to lose, I decided to reach out. Their team exceeded all expectations professional, compassionate, and incredibly knowledgeable. They guided me through the recovery process step-by-step. To my astonishment, they successfully recovered the full $68,000.50. It felt like a miracle. I am so grateful for their dedication and expertise. Digital Resolution Services gave me hope when I thought everything was lost. I highly recommend them to anyone who has been a victim of fraud. They gave me a second chance, and I’ll always be thankful. Hello! Today I came with a new character! ☆(ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*

Meet my new character Lao Wenji! ('-'*)♪ He was supposed to become an official, but he failed the state exam and became a teacher! He-he, he did it intentionally... ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) P.S: I really like the sound of music in the style of ancient China without words, a stringed instrument... What was it called? ╥﹏╥ I drew this art for just such tracks!

The Last Priest

Konishi Mansho (1600 - 1644), the last ordained priest to serve in Japan during the prohibition era of the Tokugawa Shogunate (think of the Shusaku Endo novel, "Silence", which was adapted to film by Martin Scorsese in 2016). Exiled from his homeland in 1614, he eventually made his way to Rome and enter a convent to be ordained as a priest. He would later to his home country to minister to the persecuted Christians there, only to be arrested and martyred in 1644. I tried to mimic a traditional ink painting style to invoke the melancholic feel of this homecoming journey.

Angel of Izu Islands

Julia Ota, a Korean girl who was brought back to Japan during the Imjin Wars (1592-1598). She was adopted by one of the Japanese commanders, Konishi Yukinaga, and was baptized as a Christian in 1596. She eventually became a lady-in-waiting to Tokugawa Ieyasu, but was later exiled to Izu Islands for refusing to recant her faith. Wherever she went, she became admired for her charity and evangelism, and she was revered as divinity on the islands up after her death up to the 20th century.

Old Self New Self

‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭4:22‭-‬24‬ ‭NIV‬‬ You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. //There are 6 Sundays leading up to Good Friday. In observation of Lent, I will be posting 6 works inspired by the theme. This is for the 4th Sunday of Lent.

Dream of the Midnight Sojourner

In this drawing, I was striving to capture the spirit of contemplation and reflection, a sort of spiritual sojourn, an ancient practice of pilgrimage, focusing on subjects of transcendent nature, and exploring destinations of spiritual significance. (words taken from scholarlysojourns.com). It is a self-portrait (me as a 14-year-old boy). We had just moved from Mequon to Rhinelander. It was then that I began to romanticize the natural beauty of Mequon. But at the same time, I was falling in love with the beauty of Rhinelander. In this picture, I am walking through the countryside of Mequon. The stringed musical instruments symbolize my love for the progressive classical and folk-tinged acoustic and orchestral music that was coming out of England in the late 60s and early 70s, specifically the quieter pieces of music performed by the Moody Blues, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, and Jethro Tull. A song called Reasons for Waiting by Jethro Tull is a good accompanying piece for this drawing.

The Guardian of the Pearl of Creation.

This is the first painting I made for a series on dragons that I hope to exhibit this year at my local art museum. It's a 26x36 cm watercolour painting on cotton paper. I took the concept from a Chinese god who was in charge of the pearl of creation, and turned it into a dragon with that very same pearl.

I like imagining static objects having human feelings and expressions. This little plumb one is telling me its emotion of the moment, perhaps contemplative sadness? Waiting for its time to shine?

Another Shelter in Place Day 234

Sketching at the Academy (California Academy of Science) with my five year old. This was so fun. There was so much movement that he actually focused on his own sketchbook for long enough for me to get one in. Usually, he's done by the time I put the clips on my book! The Academy and all museums are closed again with SF preemptively joining the rest of the state in the extended stay at home order this past Sunday 12/6/2020. Grateful we got to go several times while it was open.
