DAY ONE OF INTENSIVE ART TRAINING! Okay, back up, calm down... So! A little background. I am going into INTENSIVE ART TRAINING because I'm not the best at drawing humans. I want to get better so I can draw people, characters, and find my style. There will be 50 days, and this is day one. This drawing came from an old sketchbook from middle school. Whimsical. Fairy tale. Alter ego. Mixed media. Used real rose petals for the background. I’m not super happy with it but I’m still getting used to mixed media. I draw and paint the girl separately and then superimpose with modge podge.

A few years ago, I noticed a new habit of doodling faerie folks who seemed to exude off of the page. They look very doodle-y but they have ‘presence’, at the same time. I don’t know if that comes across to anyone else, but it does for me so I find them interesting. They each have part of a story that they want me to tell ... Here are five of many.

This image illustrates a Chinese fairy-tale from the 6th Century. Girl Weaver neglects her heavenly duties to spend her life on earth with the Goat Herd, this invokes the wrath of her family who force them to live apart. They are brought together for one day a year when a flock of tender-hearted magpies form a bridge to reunite them. This legend is still celebrated in China on the 7th night of the 7th month with a summer festival full of symbolism for newly-wed couples.
