One of my favourite drawings. You can tell I was really on that day. So few strokes of the pencil caught shape and light. I won't sell this drawing.

A little bit of an issue with the foreshortening of the figure. Model: Meadhbh (Maeve) 2B Pencil, Soft Charcoal Pencil on 5.5” x 8.25” Moleskine sketchbook.

Another illustration for today! The models seem to enjoy the summer!

Sketch of Amy with various arm positions. A preliminary Moleskine sketchbook work-up for a future full-sized illustration. 2B Pencil, Soft Charcoal Pencil on 5.5” x 8.25” Moleskine sketchbook. Model: Amy_D

Model Ruth resting on a platform covered by red bed sheets. Bic4 Ballpoint Pen on Archival 9” x 12” paper.

Abandoned drawing of Ellie wearing a black turtleneck. The lighting in the room was terrible and the black fabric hid a lot of the shadow detail of the folds and it frustrated me. That’s my excuse anyway… Model: Ellie.

When I am anxious I stim. When I am anxious at a café that I frequent, they give me Blu Tack to fiddle with. I make little models, and this is one of them. It is supposed to be me, meditating.

I have many odd objects in my house, but I think the oddest is the 3D printed model of my teeth (with my braces on them). Long story short, these had to be made when I got my retainers, but I was lucky enough to be able to take them and my braces home. (Don't worry, I thoroughly disinfected and cleaned the braces before gluing them on.) I genuinely forgot I had this, so finding them kind of startled me at first.

Tim was a great model in our figure drawing class. I had him pose for me for other work.

I used soft charcoal and a large sheet of newprint to depict this model in a life drawing class. He exuded a deep sadness and his poses seemed natural to his countenance. He was also very thin. “The bright side of the planet moves toward darkness And the cities are falling asleep, each in its hour, And for me, now as then, it is too much. There is too much world.” ― Czesław Miłosz, The Separate Notebooks

Tim was a great model. He started shy and then became emboldened when the women in the class wanted him to return soon.

Situational awareness is important these days. Pre-pandemic, I sometimes take my doodles to coffee shops during my lunch breaks and relax for half an hour or so by mindlessly scribbling/shading with my Bic pen. People usually leave me alone but this drawing made me realise that not everyone wants to see a man drawing a naked man. A few people took exception to my subjects’ lack of clothing and made their displeasure known by telling me. Suffice to say, I try not to go into coffee shops anymore while working on subject matter that might offend anyone. Bic4 Ballpoint Pen on 9” x 12” Archival paper. Model: Malik_E
