In my Blue Star sketchbook serious art has been interrupted by two cartoon characters I came up with years ago that I drew for my university student newspaper. They're back! Adolescent silliness returns with the adventures of Hardball and Riley. There's a bit of allegory at work in this story, so it's not as infantile as it first seems. They are certainly fun and my main characters are very easy to draw. I do sometimes spend too much time on the background.

Originally done in watercolor on watercolor paper and filtered digitally afterward.

Platinum Preppy 02 fountain pen, Noodler's black ink, watercolor paper.

Classical lighting setup. Finished piece derived from an initial sketch. Model: Meadhbh (Maeve). H, 4B pencils and white Prismacolor pencil on 9” x 12” Strathmore Toned Grey sketchbook paper.

Illustration painted with watercolors and outlined with pink pen. The borders were achieved with washi tape (low tack and unlikely to tear up your paper.)

In his seventies, this guy was a great model. Fun to draw. Lots of character.

My idea was to make a textile pattern for fabric printing. Drawn on paper with a micron pen .005, colored with pens then put into Photoshop for some color manipulation, blurring of lines and pattern arrangement.

A sketch for a large painting I want to start soon.

At the top of Pentregwenlais near Llandybie is Gwenlais Quarry. In itself, the quarry is quite beautiful with its sheer rock faces and the way that nature has started to reclaim it. This scene is one of the paths that leads down from the top of the quarry back towards Pentregwenlais. I was going to do it as a pen & wash but by the time I'd finished with the watercolour I thought it was too complex to start putting ink in there. Watercolours on watercolour paper (6x8")

3D Drawing - Number

This one was fun. I was using drawing ink on palette paper to paint this one. Then I dropped my palette paper ON my drawing. Instead of deciding I messed it up, I used the palette paper to 'finish' the background. :)

More ballpoint pen experiments. This is with a Bic Round Stic (12 for $1.49 at Staples!) on just a bond paper. Making progress with this medium, methinks!
